Description:

The 500 series is probably one of the most famous camera of the Hasselblad film cameras. And this is for a reason. The 500 C/M shoots 6x6 pictures on 120 or 220 film. This gives you the iconic “square pictures” that comes to mind when thinking about medium format photography. Compared to 35mm cameras the Hasselblad is heavy - but compare it to something like the Mamiya RB67 and you will like you are carrying a feather.

One of the main advantages of the 500CM is how modular it is. You can change and customise any parts of it from the film winder to the focusing screen. There are backs available for 120 and 220 film in 6x6 but if you want more frames put roll you can also get a 6x4.5 back! Some people even produce adapters to shoot 135 roll film with the Hasselblad. All backs are also interchangeable thanks to the dark slide. This means that you can take multiple backs with you when shooting and change from colour to black and white or high and low ISO as you please.

The other big advantage of the 500 series is the lenses. It is widely known that in the end what will make the difference in your pictures is what lenses you are using. Not to mention the Hasselblad 500 C/M is compatible with some of the sharpest lenses ever produced made by Carl Zeiss. These lenses have been made so well that the main lenses (80, 150 and 250mm) stayed mostly unmodified (except for the addition of a slightly improved T* coating release in the 70s) since their introduction in 1957!

Shooting the Hasselblad is the ultimate film photography experience. When winding to take your first picture you watch your image appear on the almost 3D looking focusing screen. You meter your scene, set the appropriate shutter speed (up to 1/500), match it with your preferred aperture, take out the dark slide, focuses, press on the shutter and CLANK, everything goes black.

Note that the Hasselblad 500 C/M is a fully manual and mechanical film camera, this means you will have to use an external light meter or the 'Sunny 16' rule when taking your pictures.

If you are getting into the world of medium format photography and want the most iconic and versatile camera of all time, this camera might just be it.
